History of Raffles

In the town of Royal Windsor, near London, the home of Raffles is a unique medieval house, dating from 1547, with important historical links to Windsor Castle.

This amazing timber framed ‘black and white’ building is situated in the Curfew Yard, close to the large circular Curfew Tower; part of the outer walls of the Castle.

There is even an ancient underground tunnel, running from the basement of the Raffles House, through a portcullis and into the dungeons of the Curfew Tower.

This important old building has more history to tell, because, although a common house, it was even used by Oliver Cromwell to sign the death warrant of King Charles I.

If you are able to visit Raffles, take time to look at this wonderful old ‘wattle and daub’ house and ask Susanne or Vikki, to tell you more about the history of this amazing building.
